Author and U.S. Army veteran Douglas R. Carlile presents Leadership: Good, Bad, Toxic, and Political, a candid look at leadership inside the military and the lasting impact it can have on soldiers, careers, and personal growth.

Drawing from his own years of service, Carlile explores different leadership styles and the lessons that can be learned from both strong and poor examples. The book discusses what leaders should and should not do, the damaging effects of toxic leadership, and the frustration of watching less qualified individuals advance while deserving soldiers are held back. It also addresses difficult issues such as racism, favoritism, and politics within the military structure.

Leadership: Good, Bad, Toxic, and Political was inspired by Carlile’s own experience of being unable to reach promotion to Sergeant First Class despite multiple attempts, strong qualifications, and years of dedication. Through his perspective, he reflects on how some senior leaders fail to uphold the standards they are expected to represent and how their decisions can affect the morale and future of those under their command.

At its core, the book reminds readers that leadership is not defined by rank alone. True leadership is shown through integrity, accountability, fairness, and the willingness to set the right example. Carlile also emphasizes that valuable lessons can come from every type of leader, sometimes even more from the bad ones than the good.

Douglas R. Carlile grew up in the Chicago suburbs and entered the Army at the age of 20. During his military career, he earned several accomplishments, including Soldier of the Year for fiscal year 2001 and NCO of the Year for fiscal year 2010. He also served as an AIT Instructor and completed Air Assault, Combatives Level 1, Basic Leaders Course, and Advanced Leaders Course. Throughout his service, Carlile took pride in leading soldiers and striving to represent the best qualities of leadership.

Leadership: Good, Bad, Toxic, and Political offers readers an honest look at what military service can truly be like beyond public perception. It is a book for those who have served, those who lead, and those who want to better understand how leadership can shape people, careers, and institutions.
