Tick Proof™ warns that the dangers of invasive new longhorned tick extend well beyond Lyme disease

Tick Proof™, a leading provider of all-natural tick repellent, is voicing concerns about the nonnative Asian longhorned tick. The Asian longhorned tick is already a known vector of several tick-borne diseases, and scientists are actively trying to determine its potential to spread Lyme. Unusualities of this tick present ample reasons for concern.

Unlike other ticks, it reproduces by parthenogenesis, so it doesn’t need a mate and can rapidly expand its territory. The first Asian longhorned tick found in America was discovered on a sheep in New Jersey less than five years ago. The aggressive species now inhabits 17 states.

Also known as the bush tick, or cattle tick, the Asian longhorned tick is native to East Asia and firmly established in Australia and New Zealand, where it has decimated parts of the cattle industry, responsible for a 25 percent reduction in dairy production.

The Asian longhorned tick is notorious for densely populating its terrain. More than ten gather on a single blade of grass, and there have been reports of ATV riders covered in hundreds of ticks after driving through a single field. Asian longhorned ticks kill cattle both from diseases the ticks transmit to them and blood loss due to the sheer number of ticks attached to a single animal.

Another concerning aspect of this tick is its appearance, very similar to the Brown dog tick. Hence, as it continues to spread in the United States, its presence may be recognized too late for preventative action, well after the tick has arrived.

The CDC has now confirmed its presence in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The US cattle industry should be on guard; livestock producers must trim grasses in and around pastures, clear fallen wood, and regularly check their animals for ticks.

The threat to humans is high. The Asian longhorned tick harbors multiple harmful bacteria, including Borrelia, the source of Lyme disease, and Rickettsia japonica, which causes Japanese spotted fever. The Asian longhorned tick can also transmit human hemorrhagic fever, the Heartland virus, and Powassan viruses, the most lethal tick-borne diseases, with a mortality rate of 10 percent.

The Asian longhorned joins the growing list of harmful ticks in America, alongside the Eastern blacklegged tick AKA “deer tick,” Western blacklegged tick, Rocky Mountain wood tick, Lone star tick, and Pacific Coast, Gulf Coast tick, and Cayenne tick. In the absence of aggressive measures to stop its spread, the Asian longhorned tick may one day claim the distinction of the most dangerous tick in the United States.

The CDC has confirmed tick-borne diseases in all 50 states. Personal protective measures are necessary for anyone spending time outdoors in an area inhabited by ticks.
