“In Lessons Learned: Short Stories of Continuity and Resilience, Michele L Turner expertly and simply recounts singular events in both her personal and professional life which prepared her, in her words, to ‘receive’ her career passion. Immediately she was introduced to the discipline of Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity, she wholeheartedly embraced the inherent core values of this expertise. As a Mennonite preacher’s daughter, her intrinsic motivation is to demonstrate her faith by doing good and helping others. Michele uses her personal interruption experiences to illustrate the need to identify business risks and plan for the unexpected. Each chapter reflects significant phases of the process: Prepare, Assess, Remediate, Sustain, and Examine. PARSE is her methodology to build the practice of business continuity. She poses many pertinent questions: Are you aware of potential risks? You don’t know what you don’t know. So work with what you do know. Hoping is not a plan. And how did that work? Debrief to learn from your mistakes. Apply the learning, and share with others.

“Michele L Turner’s approach to what would appear at first glance to be a strictly business topic demonstrates how these PARSE principles relate to other areas of our lives. New insights and increased knowledge is of little worth without application to my life, both for myself and to share these insights and skills with others. Michele challenges the reader with: “How are you embedding your learning? How are you showing your values and continuing to include them in everything that you do?” She encourages us to continue to speak up, take the risk, and stay connected. She includes useful charts and reference lists of networking websites. Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living”. Michele’s PARSE process provides the tools in Lessons Learned. I enjoyed reading Lessons Learned for its valuable content.”
