Legal tech startups in India set to gain visibility with the launch of the Indian Legal Tech Index

This unique, free-to-use resource will bring awareness about the use of technology in the legal ecosystem, and highlight promising homegrown legal tech startups

Indian Legal Tech, a niche content platform that covers legal technology in India, has announced The Legal Tech Index, a first-of-its-kind online resource to help legal tech startups in India gain greater visibility in the market and help interested tech users discover the right tools for their needs. Driven by the mission to make the Indian legal industry more aware about the use of technology in professional legal practice, the Legal Tech Index promises to be the single destination to understand the current state of legal technologies in India at a granular level.

At its core, the Legal Tech Index serves two vital purposes. On the one hand, it helps homegrown legal tech startups get discovered more easily in the market. On the other, it helps potential legal tech users get a bird’s eye view of ready-to-apply solutions. The larger goal is to help legal tech providers and consumers break through information barriers that continue to plague the Indian legal industry.

Commenting on the big picture behind this initiative, Namit Oberoy, the Founder and Director of Indian Legal Tech, said:

“The legal tech sector in India is at a very nascent stage, and while the space is young, we need to go ahead and proactively start organizing the market. This is incredibly essential to do at an early stage.

“You see, technology (just like finance) exists to service other industries. Legal tech, similarly, is part of a larger legal industry — an industry that’s notoriously unorganized. It’s a mess. We can’t let the culture and lack of organization in the Indian legal sector thwart innovation in a new, smaller one. And in order to do that, we have to create new systems that allow entrepreneurs the creative space independent of the larger industry. The Legal Tech Index is one important step in that direction.”

Apart from helping legal tech providers and legal tech consumers, the Legal Tech Index will also be useful to other sections of society, such as entrepreneurs, technologists, inventors, lawyers, investors, researchers, and young talent looking for a path to design an alternative career in the legal industry.

“When it comes to the legal sector, I see no bigger barrier to innovation than lack of usable information. Our goal is actually quite simple: join the dots, get people together, and provide them the information they need to do what they are already capable of doing. That’s all we are trying to do here: empower”, said Namit Oberoy, Founder and Director of Indian Legal tech.

The Legal Tech Index will be an open-source, searchable, structured database of legal tech companies in India, and will be accessible from early July 2020. Legal tech companies looking to boost their visibility can choose to register themselves on the Index, and use their dedicated pages to showcase business information, products, news, content, job vacancies, and more.
